An AI SEO agency in Toronto helps businesses show up when customers ask AI tools such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for answers or recommendations. The work combines traditional SEO, which makes sure your website can be crawled, indexed and trusted, with Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), which focus on making your business easy for AI systems to find, understand and cite.
It suits Toronto and GTA businesses whose customers research before they call: realtors, lawyers, accountants, insurance brokers, contractors, clinics and online stores.
This guide covers what the work involves, what Google itself says you can skip, a 10-point self-audit you can run this week, and how to judge an agency before you sign anything.
What Is AI SEO?
AI SEO is the practice of improving how often and how accurately a business appears in AI-generated search answers. It covers the website, the business’s information across the web, and its reputation on third-party sites. The goal is for AI tools to recognize the business as a relevant, credible answer when someone asks a question it can solve.
To see why this matters, it helps to know how AI answers get built. Google explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in its core Search ranking systems. They retrieve pages from the Google index and may run a “query fan-out”, issuing several related searches across subtopics before writing a response (Google Search Central).
ChatGPT and Perplexity work on a similar principle. Each uses its own crawler to find pages it can surface and link in answers (OpenAI, Perplexity).
The practical takeaway is simple. If your pages cannot be crawled, indexed and understood, no AI platform can cite them, however good your content is.
AI SEO vs Traditional SEO: Where GEO and AEO Fit
AI SEO does not replace traditional SEO. It builds on it. The three terms describe overlapping work with slightly different targets.
| Traditional SEO | AEO | GEO | |
| Main question | Can people find this page in search results? | Does this page give a clear, direct answer? | Will AI tools mention or cite this business? |
| Where it shows up | Organic results, local map pack | Featured snippets, voice answers, AI summaries | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini |
| What it relies on | Crawlability, relevance, links, page experience | Question-led headings, concise answers, structured pages | Consistent business information, credible mentions, specific expertise |
| How it is measured | Rankings, clicks, leads | Snippet and answer appearances | Citations and mentions in AI answers, referral traffic |
What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
GEO is the work of improving a business’s visibility inside answers written by generative AI tools. It pays close attention to how a brand is described across the web, not only on its own site, because AI tools often draw on reviews, directories, news coverage and forum discussions when they recommend a business.
What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
AEO is the work of structuring content so search engines and AI assistants can pull a direct answer from it. In practice, that means question-based headings, a clear answer in the first sentence or two, and supporting detail underneath.
Google’s own position is worth knowing. Its guidance says that, from Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO (Google Search Central). A good AI SEO agency treats GEO and AEO as extensions of solid SEO, not as a separate trick.
What You Don’t Need to Do: Common AI SEO Myths
A lot of AI SEO advice online sells shortcuts. Google’s July 2026 guidance lists several tactics you can ignore for Google Search (source):
- llms.txt files or “AI text files”. Google Search does not use them. They neither help nor hurt your Google visibility.
- “Chunking” content into tiny pieces. Google says its systems can understand multiple topics on one page.
- Rewriting pages just for AI. AI systems understand synonyms and meaning, so you don’t need every keyword variation.
- Mass-producing pages for every possible query. Doing this mainly to influence rankings can breach Google’s scaled content abuse policy.
- Buying or faking mentions. Inauthentic mentions are less useful than they appear, and spam systems are designed to catch them.
- Treating schema as a magic switch. Structured data is not required for AI features. It still helps with rich results and should always match the visible page.
If an agency’s pitch leads with these tactics, ask what else is in the plan.
How to Appear in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity
Each platform has its own crawler and rules, but the foundations overlap.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. Google states there are no additional technical requirements (Google Search Central).
Google also recommends keeping your Google Business Profile up to date. For local businesses, that profile is often the first thing AI answers draw on for hours, categories, location and reviews.
Traffic from AI features is included in the Search Console Performance report, and Google now points site owners to a Generative AI performance report as well.
ChatGPT Search
OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot to surface websites in ChatGPT search. Sites that block it will not appear in ChatGPT search answers, although they may still show as navigational links (OpenAI).
GPTBot is a separate crawler used for model training. You can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot.
Perplexity
Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt so your site can appear in its results (Perplexity). If you use a firewall or CDN such as Cloudflare, check it isn’t blocking these crawlers by default.
What All Three Platforms Have in Common
Across platforms, the businesses most likely to be cited tend to share three traits:
- Clear, specific pages that answer real customer questions.
- The same name, address, phone number and service details everywhere online.
- Genuine reviews and mentions on sites people already trust.
What Does an AI SEO Agency Do? The 6-Step Process
Most credible AI SEO engagements follow a sequence like this.
- Audit. Review technical health, indexing, content quality, local listings and reputation. Then record a baseline: test a set of customer-style prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and note which businesses and sources get cited.
- Keyword and prompt research. Map traditional searches (“insurance broker Scarborough”) and conversational prompts (“Which Scarborough insurance broker is good for a new driver with a G2 licence?”). Prompts reveal the follow-up questions customers actually ask.
- Technical improvements. Fix crawl blocks, indexing gaps, slow pages, duplicate URLs and robots.txt rules that shut out search crawlers. Add structured data where it matches the page.
- Content optimization. Strengthen service pages, location pages and FAQs so each one answers a real question clearly. Add specifics only your business can offer: process, pricing factors, local knowledge, credentials.
- Authority building. Earn reviews, local media coverage, association listings and partner mentions. Clean up inconsistent directory listings.
- Measurement. Track Search Console data, leads and calls, and repeat the prompt tests on a schedule. AI answers change often, so trends matter more than any single check.
Example: How a Toronto Realtor Might Approach AI Search
This is an illustrative scenario, not a client case study.
A realtor working in North York wants to appear when someone asks ChatGPT, “Who is a good realtor for first-time buyers in North York?”
A baseline check shows AI answers citing a few large brokerages and a couple of review roundups. The realtor’s own site isn’t mentioned. The audit finds four likely reasons:
- The Google Business Profile uses a generic category and has few recent reviews.
- The service-area pages are short and nearly identical.
- There is no page explaining how the realtor helps first-time buyers, step by step.
- The bio page doesn’t clearly state the brokerage, licensing or neighbourhoods served.
The fixes are mostly traditional SEO done well: a specific first-time buyer guide written from the realtor’s real process, distinct neighbourhood pages, a complete bio, an updated profile and a steady flow of genuine reviews. None of it guarantees a mention, but each change makes the business easier for both Google and AI tools to understand and trust.
The same pattern applies elsewhere. An insurance broker needs clear coverage pages for each product. A law firm needs practice-area pages that explain the process and the Ontario context. A home-service company needs service-area pages and reviews that name real jobs and neighbourhoods.
AI Search Visibility Audit Checklist for Local Businesses
You can run most of this yourself in an afternoon.
- Your important pages are indexed in Google (check Search Console).
- robots.txt and your CDN or firewall allow Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot.
- Key content is in plain text on the page, not only inside images or scripts.
- Each main service has its own page that answers who it is for, how it works and what it costs to scope.
- Your FAQs answer questions customers actually ask, in the first sentence of each answer.
- Your business name, address, phone and hours match across your site, Google Business Profile and directories.
- Your Google Business Profile has accurate categories, services, photos and recent reviews.
- Your about and team pages show real people, credentials and experience.
- Structured data (such as LocalBusiness and Organization) matches what visitors can see.
- You have tested five to ten customer-style prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and recorded who gets cited.
How to Choose the Best AI SEO Agency in Toronto
The right agency should be able to explain its work in plain language and show how it will be measured. Ask these questions before you sign:
- How will you measure AI visibility? Expect a repeatable prompt-testing method plus Search Console and lead data, not screenshots alone.
- What will the first 90 days include? Look for an audit, a prioritized fix list and named deliverables.
- Who does the work? Find out whether a strategist, writer and developer are involved, and who you will talk to.
- Can you show real results? Ask for anonymized Search Console data or lead reports from comparable businesses.
- Will you implement fixes or only report them? Technical issues need someone who can change the website.
Watch for these red flags:
- Guaranteed placement in ChatGPT, AI Overviews or the top spot on Google.
- A plan built mainly on llms.txt files, schema or bulk AI-written pages.
- Offers to create reviews or mentions on your behalf.
- Claims of special access to Google’s systems. Google says no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems.
- Reports full of rankings with no link to calls, forms or revenue.
Frequently Asked Questions About AI SEO in Toronto
How much does AI SEO cost in Toronto?
AI SEO pricing depends on scope, not a standard rate. The main cost drivers are your website’s technical condition, how many services and locations you need to cover, how much content must be written, how competitive your industry is and whether local listings need cleanup. Ask for a quote tied to specific deliverables so you can compare agencies fairly.
How long does AI SEO take to show results?
Most businesses should plan in months, not weeks. Google notes that recrawling a changed page can take anywhere from several days to several months. Content and reputation improvements take longer to build. AI answers also vary from one check to the next, so judge progress on trends over time.
Does traditional SEO still matter for AI search?
Yes. Google states that its AI features rely on the same index and ranking systems as regular Search, and that SEO best practices still apply. Strong traditional SEO is the foundation that AI visibility is built on.
Can AI SEO help local businesses get more customers?
It can, when the basics are in place. Local businesses with complete Google Business Profiles, clear service pages and genuine reviews give AI tools more reliable information to recommend. Results depend on your market, your competitors and how well your site converts visitors.
Can an agency guarantee my business will appear in ChatGPT or AI Overviews?
No. No agency controls what AI platforms show, and Google states that indexing and serving are never guaranteed. A trustworthy agency will promise a clear process and honest reporting instead.
